Hyperhidrosis

Also known as polyhidrosis and sudorrhea, hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating to the extent of being physically uncomfortable, embarrassing, and potentially psychologically traumatic. It may affect one or more areas of the body including most often the armpits, feet, hands, and/or face. If you suffer from hyperhidrosis you aren’t alone—it affects close to eight million people in the United States alone.

Causes

There are two kinds of hyperhidrosis: primary and secondary. The causes behind primary hyperhidrosis are not well understood, but it is speculated that a genetic component is involved. Secondary hyperhidrosis can be caused by a number of health issues including anxiety, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, obesity, and more.

Treatment with miraDry

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), miraDry eliminates underarm sweat and odor by destroying a specific group of glands causing the issue. While it’s true we need to perspire in order to regulate our body temperature, only a small amount of glands are located in this area. Sweat production throughout the rest of the body will still keep you cool.

The procedure

The miraDry procedure is noninvasive and can be done right in our office. It typically takes an hour or less, and you can resume your daily activities right afterward.

We begin by numbing your armpits with local anesthesia, then we prepare the specific treatment location. Next we use a specially designed handpiece on the designated area that directs thermal energy into the sweat and odor glands for a predetermined amount of time.

While the glands are being destroyed on the inside, the surface of the skin remains comfortable and protected by a continuous hydro-ceramic cooling system. Once the sweat glands are eradicated, they will not come back.
