Changes to our bodies are natural as we age. Additional fine lines around the eyes. A couple of extra pounds surrounding the middle. Losing our hair, however, can feel like a particular blow in our quest for a youthful appearance and result in feelings of self-consciousness and low self-esteem. Fortunately, help is available with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Hair loss

A number of different factors can result in hair loss, ranging from genetics and getting older to stress or a hormone imbalance. Some medications, along with certain health conditions like alopecia areata, psoriasis, and thyroid disease, can also contribute. Nutrient deficiencies, poor hair care practices, and scalp infections can play a role as well.

Men and women

Both men and women suffer from hair loss. For men with hereditary male pattern baldness, a quarter begin losing before they hit 21. Two thirds are affected by age 35 and 85% have much thinner hair by the time they are 50. Forty percent of women have noticeable hair loss by age 40.

Platelet-rich plasma

Platelet-rich plasma injections have become go-to treatments for a variety of issues ranging from joint injuries and wound healing to hair loss. The process employs an individual’s own blood, puts it through a specialized process, and then uses it to encourage faster growth and healing in the affected area.

The process

Blood is drawn from the arm, then placed in a centrifuge where it is spun at a high speed in order to separate it into three parts: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected or used in a microneedling procedure in areas of the scalp where hair growth needs a boost.

The procedure is noninvasive and can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment options like hair transplantation, medications, hormone replacement therapy, and dietary supplements. Given the treatment is taken from an individual’s own body, it’s perfectly safe and requires no downtime for recovery.

Good candidates

PRP can be performed on people who are in good health and seeking a fuller, thicker head of hair. Certain health conditions and medications may mean it’s not the right choice for some people, so be sure to discuss any health concerns and prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, herbs, and supplements with the doctor.
